Professional oboe reed measurements
The finished reed length depends on the staple, whether it is 45, 46 or 47 mm. The staple length affects the final reed length and therefore the pitch. As a general reference, a longer reed tends to lower the pitch, while a shorter reed tends to raise it.
- Chiarugi 47 2: finished reed of 72 mm. The longest option and the standard for most oboists.
- Chiarugi 46 2: finished reed of 71 mm. An intermediate option to balance length, response and pitch.
- Chiarugi 45 2: finished reed of 70 mm. The shortest option and useful if you often feel low and need to push the pitch up.
Final pitch also depends on the scrape, opening, hardness, embouchure, instrument and each oboist’s way of playing.
